AFTER DARK

After Dark is a late-night cyberpunk café and hangout space where food, coffee, and gaming coexist.

Late-night spaces often fall into predictable branding traps. Either overly grungy and aggressive, or overly minimal and aesthetic with no real personality. Many try hard to look “cool,” but end up feeling forced or generic.

This project explores how to brand a late-night space that feels confident, high-energy, and unmistakable without trying too hard.


The Core Problem

Late-night cafés serve a very specific audience: people who are alert, active, and intentionally awake, not winding down.

Yet most brands in this space:
• Use muted palettes that don’t match the energy of the hour
• Feel visually flat in low-light environments
• Lack a strong point of view

As a result, the experience doesn’t fully match the mindset of the people using the space.

The challenge:
How do you design a brand that visually matches the intensity of midnight: bold, awake, and charged, without feeling cold or inaccessible?


Design Objective

To create a visual identity that:
• Feels bold and confident, not performative
• Holds attention instantly in dark, low-light environments
• Signals energy, alertness, and edge
• Reflects a specific state of mind: being up when the world is asleep

This brand wasn’t meant to be subtle. It was meant to be clear about who it’s for.


Strategic Design Approach

1. Mood before visuals
The brand was built by defining the feeling first: dark, confident, slightly rebellious, but not hostile.

Why:
When branding is driven by mood rather than trends, the visuals become more cohesive and intentional across touchpoints.

2. High-contrast colour system
Deep purples paired with electric neon accents form the core palette.

Design logic:
• High contrast improves visibility in low-light settings
• Neon tones reference city lights, screens, and night streets
• Colour reinforces energy rather than calm

The palette is designed to feel charged, not decorative.

3. Sharp, compressed typography
Typography is bold, tight, and punchy, inspired by cyberpunk aesthetics and urban signage.

Why:
Compressed type holds space aggressively and stays legible at a distance, making it ideal for posters, packaging, and signage in fast-paced environments.

4. System built for instant impact
Every application from packaging to posters to merchandise was designed to grab attention immediately.

Purpose:
Late-night brands don’t need subtle storytelling. They need to communicate fast, clearly, and confidently.


Outcome

After Dark becomes more than a café, it becomes a signal.

A signal for:
• Night-owls
• Gamers
• People who thrive after midnight

The brand states exactly what it stands for: Stay up. Stay wired.


What This Project Demonstrates

This project reflects how I approach branding:
• Starting with positioning, not visuals
• Designing for real environments and real behaviour
• Creating systems that are intentional, not aesthetic-led

Good branding doesn’t try to appeal to everyone. It commits fully to the people it’s meant for.
